DVA: Fly Juice

Been listening to this one for more than a min.

DVA is back w/ a release on Hyperdub with an EP, Fly Juice. Still with the fresh melodies, still with the ravy bounce in the riddims, still with what seems to be non 4/4 cadence for dancefloor, DVA returns with his signature strain of soul. None more evident than in the title track Fly Juice. Looping chords, adjoining sound efx and samples, all make for a nice orchestration worth of both the DVA and Hyperdub stamp. I like these little notices I get in my inbox, this notice coming all the way out from Germany. Nice. Something called The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of by Pawcut.
There are days when I'm just trying to hear samples, chopped, add drum breaks, and period. There's something still lovely about hearing a track that's gone through that process. They're also on the lower end of the tempo scale, creating a complement to the jazz breaks. Either way, enjoy this piece from Pawcut.

Something out now from Detroit's own Waajeed aka Jeedo, is a my kind of 12". A dope track as a picture disk. No one f*cks w/ them anymore. Well, here's one you might want to hang on the wall. Make It Boom b/w Let It All Hangout is a collaborative release between Jeedo's DIRT TECH RECK label and Spills. 2 instrumental floor bangers featuring those Jeedo kicks and snares that can easily keep the night going, and the ladies glowing. Say Wrd.








And here's a fun video to boot. You gotta lol sometimes. ;) But let's appreciate the true work that went in to creating this piece. It all started when I got an email from Hudmo saying he was longing to come back to Toronto. A few emails later, we were able to confirm the ONLY CANADIAN date from the most desired duo: TNGHT.
Lunice & Hudson Mohawke, both of whom fly the Lucky Me flag have been officially joined at the hip as TNGHT just under 1 yr, but have fostered a dizzying desire for all to convene at the dancefloor, taking in their brand of big bass, rattling bins, and making pretty girls go bonkers. Say wrd. The press has been lining up, praising the band, but this is something that a few of us knew already. ;)

Coming from Affine Records, Viennese purveyors of some of the more progressive sounds fusing beats and jazz, comes a new project. Sixtus Preiss, also Vienna based, delivers a new 12" which will feature his own take on jazz for clubs. The big room sound of the Samba Feelin Beein This is something that I could see played at say famed Bimhuis, just like a dancefoor - not an easy feet. Keys, drums, hot melodies, all marry in this musical merriment on this release. Added bonus is a Cid Rim, making this 12" a solid release.

fLako: Honey Drips

A few days ago, I saw a few posts about fLako and some chatter about his music but positioning him as a new artist. Never deny discovery I say and love to see ppl get their due. Glad to see things coming all together for fLako. Been a min of hard work, with the light at the end of the tunnel seeming distant some days, but it's now time.
Though he had several works floating around, fLako's break out my have been either the Ho Tep release, that featured the slamming Rubies & Diamonds, under his alias of Dirg Gerner, or the Carving Away The Clay EP from PMC. He decidedly added vocals and slowed his tempo in both of these phenomenal EPs.
He's now on schedule to have another release drop from the good ppl at Five Easy Pieces. This Elosure EP will drop Nov 5 2012 and will follow in the foot steps of the sound that he's so well crafted as with the last two releases. Vocals, and some beautifully rhythmic production and melodies that at times feel drawn from his Chilean inspiration. Maybe? Either way, look for this EP to drop soon, and lock in.

Nick Storring

Set to perform at the X Avant Festival at the Music Gallery will be Toronto's Nick Storring. The trained cellist who considers himself "a bit of tough act to follow" as he sees himself being all over the place musically.
He's written for chamber music ensembles, has produced left abstract electronic music under his own name and has even done beat driven material under as Piège.
At the Oct 18th X Avant Festival event next week, Nick Storring plans to employ the following set up:

cello, voice, electric mandola, Korg Monotron, and other small percussion/ reed instruments being sent through Ableton (and various VSTs/ Max for Live stuff) for processing and looping... I may also bring my Yamaha DX7

Here's a short interview done speaking on his music and style.



Though his live sets have been layered with beats, big sounding with soloist cello parts, he recently has been moving to incorporate more organic feel drawing from the chamber music he's been writing.



Look for Nick Storring to open for Shigeto in Part 1 of the X Avant double feature Oct 18th.

In a bit of an unforeseen move, we have some good ol' rap music coming from the Eglo Records camp. And it is some good ol' rap. Strange U has a 6 track EP ready to drop from the Eglo Records camp on November, and has leaked a video to introduce the world to Strange U.
Scarlet Jungle, a stripped track of a classic drum break and chords features co hort Shadowstar Boxer. It's an ode to how it once was, and not how it currently is. Cue the rap cassette tapes.

S-Type: Billboard EP

Good friends @ Lucky Me are quite busy. It's been a whirlwind last few years and there's no real sign of slowing down.
Now, next in line to come from the famed art n party curators is long time friend and associate, producer S-Type. The accomplished drummer and tickler of keys who comes from a lineage of musicians, 1st got to chop it up on the famed MPC2000 but had since moved to Logic and Pro Tools as weapons of choice. This arsenal and resultant collateral damage has commanded attention from several MCs, with details due A$AP. #funny.



Either way, thew new EP from S-Type is entitled Billboard and will be in stores Oct 16th. It will feature that new brand of sound that has been the riddims of choice: intense, rhythmic w/ tons of bounce. Here's the 1st single from the EP: Walrus ft Budgie

Karriem Riggins: 12's in 8 b/w Analog Days 45

In what is another bonus release from Karriem Riggins and Stones Throw, the 45 that is included with the Together LP.
Simply put, another prized piece and a must own for the fans. This 45 includes the revered classic 12's in 8, and track that bewildered listeners from it's 1st appearance yrs ago on that once rare Kaleidoscope mix, then more widely heard on Beat Machine. Years later, this song is still a banger.

But the b-side is what had me most curious and was delivered to the inbox yesterday. Another tight beat from Karriem Riggins on his 3000 (i'll assume). Sharp drums of course, with synth medley looping throughout the track.

In something that dropped recently, Push Beats massive from Chicago are having their say in what may be an overlooked part of town. With pockets of producers springing out outside of LA and EU, it's refreshing to see scenes developing slowly, creating the needed network to allow for comfortable touring dates. Free The Robots: EP Vol.2

Returning to the scene of the beat and rhyme, Santa Ana's Free The Robots releases EP Vol.2 in a series of EPs, 1st appearing in 2007 (wow). In what was originally unseen and unheard - only on mixes and live dates, FTR decodes to release some of this exclusive material in leading to an EP Vol.3 as we round the corner to 2013, marking a decade of Free The Robots. His mellifluous mélange of all things psych, hip hop, jazz, blues and electronic has been an ode to the classic sample and chop, adding kicks, snare, creating progressive and artful arrangements.
EP Vol.2 and soon to come Vol.3 will explore his past, present and future via these tuneful travels.

Flying Lotus Listening: Recap

As all of you who came last night, we Toronto had it's Until The Quiet Comes listening party last night at The Drake Hotel. Don't be stuck on the party end, as it was meant to be a amongst friends. The like minded under one roof, to listen to a record that is set to possibly create a new standard in "beat music".
The night was tagged as a night of HiFi and lo lights. The dimly lit room as arranged like a very large living room, with couches spread across the dance floor, and coffee tables placed about to created the desired effect.
After going through a select set of Flying Lotus classic, and right before hitting play on the new record, we were joined by a very special guest:



Flying Lotus took a few mins out of his schedule to conduct a live interview on the giant HD screen (yup), speaking about Until The Quiet Comes, the inspiration, the direction, the guests on the record, the groundswell of anticipation that has been very evident in EU and esp in on this side of the pond... Either way, it was a surprise that no one expected by the sounds of the gasps. But technology is our friend. ;)



After the 15 min chat, he just asked we get fucked up, have a good time and enjoy the record. So we did.

Thanks to all who came out for something that needs to happen tons more. Music listening. Thanks to Flying Lotus for spending a few mins with us. See you in two weeks.

A mix for that academic in you, this is will expose you to the genius that was Sun Ra. Mr Beatnick, a RBMA alum, producer, writer and all around renaissance man has put together a mix for One Handed Music. As he puts it:

"Struck by the enormity of the cosmic task at hand, I ended up with snapshots from a range of Ra's work. You have the ballads, the standards, the poetry and the freak-outs all balanced in harmony, just as it was in a typical Arkestra performance, darkness counterpointed with bursts of bright frenetic energy. A lot of focus is on the 70s, partly cause that was a prolific and funky time for the band, partly just cause it's my favourite period. I wish I could have made it 12 hours long and got in all the tracks I wanted to, and the mix wouldn't have been possible without Kirk DeGiorgio and Max Cole who put me on to a ton of these tracks, so this is dedicated to them with astral thanks. There are other worlds they have not told you of, that wish to speak to you."

Clark's Originals Presents Tokimonsta Remix [DWNLD]

In another music endeavour, a well known company comes in the fray. Long time shoe supplier for true rootsmen worldwide, Clarks Original is offering a collaborative campaign w/ Trojan Records with a remix project. Renown producers were picked out to remix a Pioneers song Let Your Yeah Be Yeah, and TOKiMONSTA was among the selected. They also shot a short doc, following the 1st lady of Brainfeeder around as she does her thing.
