Flying Lotus: Behind The Scenes Of A/V Show

If you've not seen Flying Lotus' a/v show on his Until The Quiet Comes tour, it's something to behold. At his Toronto show, he told me to make sure I was in the corwd for the start. So I obliged. Wow. Imagine not seeing your audience for nearly the entirety of the show. That's the sacrifice that Flying Lotus and his a/v design team of Dr. Strangeloop and Timeboy made for this cinematic chef d'oeuvre. Listen to Flying Lotus and crew speak on it, and head over to Wired to watch the video. Click on the image above or below. [via]

Check for dates in your city. You'll be happy you went. ;)

Erykha Badu @ Boiler Room x Low End Theory [DWNLD]

I watched it live, and if you missed it - you can relive it yourself.
Erykha Badu was @ the Boiler Room x Low End Theory extravaganza that was set up to celebrate the Flying Lotus release of Until The Quiet Comes.

Enjoy the sounds of one Ba-doula.

DVA: Fly Juice

Been listening to this one for more than a min.

DVA is back w/ a release on Hyperdub with an EP, Fly Juice. Still with the fresh melodies, still with the ravy bounce in the riddims, still with what seems to be non 4/4 cadence for dancefloor, DVA returns with his signature strain of soul. None more evident than in the title track Fly Juice. Looping chords, adjoining sound efx and samples, all make for a nice orchestration worth of both the DVA and Hyperdub stamp. The rest of the tracklist looks like this, physical and digital.

01. Fly Juice
02. Do It
03. Walk It Out
04. Long Street feat. Big Space
05. Fly Juice (4/4 Dub Mix) (Digital Bonus)
06. Ganja (French Fries Remix) (Digital Bonus)
07. Rumors feat. Inga Copeland (Digital Bonus)
08. Shook (Digital Bonus)

DVA's Fly Juice will be out Nov 20th 2012 in all fine outlets and online.

Pawcut: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of [DWNLD]

I like these little notices I get in my inbox, this notice coming all the way out from Germany. Nice. Something called The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of by Pawcut.
There are days when I'm just trying to hear samples, chopped, add drum breaks, and period. There's something still lovely about hearing a track that's gone through that process. They're also on the lower end of the tempo scale, creating a complement to the jazz breaks. Either way, enjoy this piece from Pawcut.

It's a free download.

xSDTRK: powDer [DWNLD]

I was trying to find this tweet of mind about bands w/ no vowels. I'll find it. Either way, I got this email about someone out of MTL: xSDTRK. I love mysteries... 1st release of what I hope might be a few more. You guys know I have a penchant for a lovely voice, and hazy electronics.

Enjoy this freebie and stay tuned.

Then lo and behold, and email outlining a remix he had coming for John Talabot's rmx 12". Nice. Just as nice was this Kenton Slash Demon remix that will be surfacing as well. Nice nice.

Jeedo: Make It Boom b/w Let It All Hangout [VIDEO]

Something out now from Detroit's own Waajeed aka Jeedo, is a my kind of 12". A dope track as a picture disk. No one f*cks w/ them anymore. Well, here's one you might want to hang on the wall. Make It Boom b/w Let It All Hangout is a collaborative release between Jeedo's DIRT TECH RECK label and Spills. 2 instrumental floor bangers featuring those Jeedo kicks and snares that can easily keep the night going, and the ladies glowing. Say Wrd.

And here's a fun video to boot. You gotta lol sometimes. ;) But let's appreciate the true work that went in to creating this piece. Tons of youtubing, drawing it down to something like 50 or so clips of booty shaking to create this edit. Phew. That's tons of work. Shouts to Jeedo for having that discerning eye.

Check your fave local shops for this picture disc, and keep you eyes peeled for the EP that will feature rmxs from Shigeto and Charles Trees.

But as a treat, they've been gracious enough let offer a freebie. The Samba Feelin Beein This (Cid Rim Remix) is out for all to enjoy, and is a wonderfully synthsational edit.

Happy Bday Alexander Nut: Rinse FM Show

Could it have been any better?? Head of Eglo Records, Ho_Tep and all around good mans got to celebrate his bday doing what might be his fave thing - or maybe 2nd fave. Either way, what we got to enjoy was a birthday celebration live - on the Rinse FM airwaves. Relive the show below, and if you're a libra like he and I? Happy bday (belated or not)

Rinse FM w/ Alexander Nut, Oct 13 2012

Hyperdub Show on Rinse FM: Oct 2012

As with every month, Hyperdub had their monthly show at Rinse FM at a new slot, Sunday nights - which I need to remind myself of. Anyhow, featured guest was Machinedrum, 1/2 of Sepalcure, and all world producer of many sounds. Either way, as usual DVA and Hyperdub head master Kode 9 supplied new riddims and rib-tickling. 2hrs solid.

Hyperdub Show on Rinse FM - Oct 2012 feat Machinedrum

Lapalux: Some Other Time EP

Out today, the new Lapalux EP. Author of many a banger full of emotional swings and plodding measures, Lapalux returns to Brainfeeder with his 2nd EP Some Other Time. As with this lead single Forgetting And Learning Again ft. Kerry Leatham released a few weeks ago, we sample his ways of creating oeuvres downcast, downtempo, yet somehow delightful.

Some Other Time by Lapalux is out today and available worldwide of wax and digital.

Lock in.

Sixtus Preiss: Samba Feelin Beein This

Coming from Affine Records, Viennese purveyors of some of the more progressive sounds fusing beats and jazz, comes a new project. Sixtus Preiss, also Vienna based, delivers a new 12" which will feature his own take on jazz for clubs. The big room sound of the Samba Feelin Beein This is something that I could see played at say famed Bimhuis, just like a dancefoor - not an easy feet. Keys, drums, hot melodies, all marry in this musical merriment on this release. Added bonus is a Cid Rim, making this 12" a solid release.

01 Samba Feelin Beein This
02 Kation
03 Samba Feelin Beein This (Cid Rim Remix)

Get your hands on this, as it's now in stores @ your local shop. More info.

Nice nice.

This is the kinda of work I love to hear. Some fun collaboration that I'm certain will feature something audacious yet still amiable.
Leaked earlier this year, a collab called S3, comprised of crooner Miles Bonny, and the beat concoctions of Brenk Sinatra aka Brenk, will be making it's way to your ears Oct 26th 2012. Supa Soul Sh*t will be just that. And from the sounds of this video teaser, we have a winner.

You'll Soon Know on NTS Live w/ Special Guests [DWNLD]

A few nights back, just popped open a radio app and locked in for You'll Soon Know's radio program on NTS Live. A number of guests were on deck to contribute: Alphabets Heaven, Time Wharp, Howse. Thank the lord I did as we were privy to some exclusives throughout the 2 hrs show. And, better yet, it was archived for those who missed, or simply want to relive the show. There is a download link. ;)

fLako: Honey Drips

A few days ago, I saw a few posts about fLako and some chatter about his music but positioning him as a new artist. Never deny discovery I say and love to see ppl get their due. Glad to see things coming all together for fLako. Been a min of hard work, with the light at the end of the tunnel seeming distant some days, but it's now time.
Though he had several works floating around, fLako's break out my have been either the Ho Tep release, that featured the slamming Rubies & Diamonds, under his alias of Dirg Gerner, or the Carving Away The Clay EP from PMC. He decidedly added vocals and slowed his tempo in both of these phenomenal EPs.
He's now on schedule to have another release drop from the good ppl at Five Easy Pieces. This Elosure EP will drop Nov 5 2012 and will follow in the foot steps of the sound that he's so well crafted as with the last two releases. Vocals, and some beautifully rhythmic production and melodies that at times feel drawn from his Chilean inspiration. Maybe? Either way, look for this EP to drop soon, and lock in.

fLako - Eclosure (12" Vinyl / Digital)

A1 Honey Drips
A2 Mating Dance
B1 Lion's Mane w/ Dirg Gerner
B4 Eclosure

Hit up Five Easy Pieces for more info.

Nick Storring

Set to perform at the X Avant Festival at the Music Gallery will be Toronto's Nick Storring. The trained cellist who considers himself "a bit of tough act to follow" as he sees himself being all over the place musically.
He's written for chamber music ensembles, has produced left abstract electronic music under his own name and has even done beat driven material under as Piège.
At the Oct 18th X Avant Festival event next week, Nick Storring plans to employ the following set up:

cello, voice, electric mandola, Korg Monotron, and other small percussion/ reed instruments being sent through Ableton (and various VSTs/ Max for Live stuff) for processing and looping... I may also bring my Yamaha DX7

Here's a short interview done speaking on his music and style.

Though his live sets have been layered with beats, big sounding with soloist cello parts, he recently has been moving to incorporate more organic feel drawing from the chamber music he's been writing.

Look for Nick Storring to open for Shigeto in Part 1 of the X Avant double feature Oct 18th.

Kidsuke: SGstep

The buzzing and critically acclaimed collab called Kidsuke (Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe) has leaked another single ahead of the self titled LP. SGstep is a bricolage of a beat, sounds seemingly pulled from all over, set to a bouncy tempo. Take it in. ;)

The Kidsuke LP will be available November 2 2012. You can get all pre order info from Projectmoon Circle.

Strange U: Scarlet Jungle ft. Shadowstar Boxer

In a bit of an unforeseen move, we have some good ol' rap music coming from the Eglo Records camp. And it is some good ol' rap. Strange U has a 6 track EP ready to drop from the Eglo Records camp on November, and has leaked a video to introduce the world to Strange U.
Scarlet Jungle, a stripped track of a classic drum break and chords features co hort Shadowstar Boxer. It's an ode to how it once was, and not how it currently is. Cue the rap cassette tapes.

Stay tuned.

Purity Ring: Belispeak II feat Danny Brown

Fresh from not crossing the Canadian border for a show, leave it do Danny Brown to still f*ck w/ some canadians. Spitting on what has been one of my fave songs, Danny Brown meets Purity Ring for sacrilegious rework of Belispeak form the Canadian duo.

Jury's out on this one. I love the original from Purity Ring and Danny Brown is cool Does this work? On you.

No indication of this dropping anywhere, so I guess cats need to wait for that rip from the impatient cats.

Staycen & Koen: Never too late

Something I've been sitting on from one of our fave Dutch dude Koen, is a new collab that he's releasing via Soulection. Collaborator Staycen & Koen has bridged that Atlantic gap in this newest international UN alliance. Foreign Exchange anyone?? We certainly know how fruitful that became, and with previous history here, we have no reason to not expect the same. The 1st single is here for all to download: Never too late

Pls feel free to stream this little teaser as well.

The EP drops on Soulection Oct 15th. STay locked.

S-Type: Billboard EP

Good friends @ Lucky Me are quite busy. It's been a whirlwind last few years and there's no real sign of slowing down.
Now, next in line to come from the famed art n party curators is long time friend and associate, producer S-Type. The accomplished drummer and tickler of keys who comes from a lineage of musicians, 1st got to chop it up on the famed MPC2000 but had since moved to Logic and Pro Tools as weapons of choice. This arsenal and resultant collateral damage has commanded attention from several MCs, with details due A$AP. #funny.

Either way, thew new EP from S-Type is entitled Billboard and will be in stores Oct 16th. It will feature that new brand of sound that has been the riddims of choice: intense, rhythmic w/ tons of bounce. Here's the 1st single from the EP: Walrus ft Budgie

Billboard EP will be out Oct 16th on both wax and digi. Click away for pre-orders. ;)

Jeremih: Fuck u all the time (Shlohmo Remix)

Been a hot min since I did anything Shlohmo. Not since Mutek have I run into and or spoken to dude. So moments ago as I watched this Low End x Boiler Room, Shlohmo snuck out a track, his usual re interpretations.
This time around, Jeremih is the beneficiary. Taken from his recent mixtape, Fuck u all the time gets that Shlohmo waxing and, you know the rest...

Karriem Riggins: 12's in 8 b/w Analog Days 45

In what is another bonus release from Karriem Riggins and Stones Throw, the 45 that is included with the Together LP.
Simply put, another prized piece and a must own for the fans. This 45 includes the revered classic 12's in 8, and track that bewildered listeners from it's 1st appearance yrs ago on that once rare Kaleidoscope mix, then more widely heard on Beat Machine. Years later, this song is still a banger.

But the b-side is what had me most curious and was delivered to the inbox yesterday. Another tight beat from Karriem Riggins on his 3000 (i'll assume). Sharp drums of course, with synth medley looping throughout the track.

Analog Days

Do yourself and favour and scoop this 45 from Stones Throw whilst you still can.

Push Beats Compilation Vol. 1

Chitown stand up.

In something that dropped recently, Push Beats massive from Chicago are having their say in what may be an overlooked part of town. With pockets of producers springing out outside of LA and EU, it's refreshing to see scenes developing slowly, creating the needed network to allow for comfortable touring dates. Either way, Push Beats have a comp unifying much of their crew, neighbouring friends, exposing the world to their works:

You can stream the LP here, and also download it over on their bandcamp.

Free The Robots: EP Vol.2

Flying Lotus Listening: Recap

As all of you who came last night, we Toronto had it's Until The Quiet Comes listening party last night at The Drake Hotel. Don't be stuck on the party end, as it was meant to be a amongst friends. The like minded under one roof, to listen to a record that is set to possibly create a new standard in "beat music".
The night was tagged as a night of HiFi and lo lights. The dimly lit room as arranged like a very large living room, with couches spread across the dance floor, and coffee tables placed about to created the desired effect.
After going through a select set of Flying Lotus classic, and right before hitting play on the new record, we were joined by a very special guest:

Flying Lotus took a few mins out of his schedule to conduct a live interview on the giant HD screen (yup), speaking about Until The Quiet Comes, the inspiration, the direction, the guests on the record, the groundswell of anticipation that has been very evident in EU and esp in on this side of the pond... Either way, it was a surprise that no one expected by the sounds of the gasps. But technology is our friend. ;)

After the 15 min chat, he just asked we get fucked up, have a good time and enjoy the record. So we did.

Thanks to all who came out for something that needs to happen tons more. Music listening. Thanks to Flying Lotus for spending a few mins with us. See you in two weeks.

Stay tuned....

Until The Quiet Comes is available today in EU/UK, tomorrow in America.

OHM Podcast: Mr. Beatnick presents Sun Ra

Classic hashtag. #uneasylistening.

A mix for that academic in you, this is will expose you to the genius that was Sun Ra. Mr Beatnick, a RBMA alum, producer, writer and all around renaissance man has put together a mix for One Handed Music. As he puts it:

"Struck by the enormity of the cosmic task at hand, I ended up with snapshots from a range of Ra's work. You have the ballads, the standards, the poetry and the freak-outs all balanced in harmony, just as it was in a typical Arkestra performance, darkness counterpointed with bursts of bright frenetic energy. A lot of focus is on the 70s, partly cause that was a prolific and funky time for the band, partly just cause it's my favourite period. I wish I could have made it 12 hours long and got in all the tracks I wanted to, and the mix wouldn't have been possible without Kirk DeGiorgio and Max Cole who put me on to a ton of these tracks, so this is dedicated to them with astral thanks. There are other worlds they have not told you of, that wish to speak to you."

Discipline Intro
Outer Spaceways Incorporated
Love In Outer Space
Somebody Else’s World
Mayan Temple
The Antique Blacks
Island In The Sun
There Is Change In The Air
Night Of The Purple Moon
Space Is The Place
Nuclear War
Journey Onwards
The Cosmic Exploror
God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be
Strange Worlds
Where There Is No Sun Outro

So download and enjoy the mix, hosted by the good ppl over at One Handed Music.
