Analogue Monsta: Conversion Theory [VIDEO]

Something that dropped some weeks back under my nose, a new clip supporting the Analogue Monsta project BOOM by Suzi Analogue and a certain Tokimonsta of Brainfeeder fame.
The short series on female producers we did sometime this past summer commanded a fair share of attention, and our Analogue Monsta post was no exception.
Enjoy the conceptual Conversion Theory video which dropped last month, featuring Suzi Analogue front and centre.

Sonnymoon: Blast Off / Dr. Doctor

2 of Sonnymoon's early joints have been released as freebies. Blast Off, a track I played incessantly has been offered as a download. Added to this post was another, Dr. Doctor which I can't immediately recall, but typifies the sound that got me hooked. Take it in. Take it home.

Do recall that Sonnymoon is starting a tour of the US with B. Lewis. You can check the dates out here.

Enjoy.

Sonnymoon: Nothing Thought / Tour Dates

One of my fave bands out now got newness. Sonnymoon, who are rumored to be moving to NYC, have just released a new single Nothing Thought. This come just in time for a fall tour.
Nothing Thought finds the now quartet delving into slightly more organic instrumentation, as this bare bones track builds through guitar and Anna's vox angelica, eventually adding a simple snare. The track however closes with a beautiful electronic break - something that I have always loved from the band.

The track gets fantastic re edit from British Natural Self, bringing a more experimental spirit to the track. The remix is up for download for free for all. You can find it here or down below with the original single.

You can buy the new single on iTunes.

As mentioned previously, they're embarking on a tour that will have them cut across the US. Dates are as follows:

BoomBaptist: Lost Files v3

Somewhere on my external HD, I have v1 & v2 getting some play. But I had yet to post about it. Redemption!
In a series that he's been steadily pumping out, Austin's most saint resident Boombaptist dropped a new batch of older rarities, banged out from the most glorious MPC. You can scoop it from his bandcamp along with some cool swag he's got for sale.

Enjoy!

Elusive: MEGAHURTS

Your man is back with a new record. Cali's Elusive has just dropped an LP, Megahurts. As much as I love all forms of electronic, there's nothing like hearing sample chops, kicks snares, all cut in a hip hop form. Elusive has been that dude.

You can scoop the Megahurts LP online now. Hit up his bandcamp.

Om unit: Ulysses VIP

It's been few a little whilst (at least by his standards) since we've last heard from Om Unit. He was likely getting some rest after this exhaustive North American Tour that had him zig zagging across the USA and Canada.
Regardless, just over 1hr ago, he uploaded a Ulysses VIP Edit. Originally off the Aeolian EP, Ulysses has seen a shiny remix edit, and is now available: for free.

How someone so eloquently put it in the comments section: "How can this be free... Such a tune.". Indeed.

So go head and hit the download arrow, and enjoy.

Nangdo: Bootyleg EP

Emerging from the shores of Holland, Koen had introduced me to a bud of his, another cat who's penchant for honeyed harmonies commanded the attention of the likes of California's Soulection.
Nangdo has just released his Bootyleg EP. This 5 cut release takes us to an orbit occupied by the few who dabble in electronic fused with soul - in an afta1ish kinda way. Soft samples, soothing synths, subtle snares all consolidate into a very easy EP to sample start to cessation - even with a few clubby themed riddims (like Braggin Bites).

You can scoop the Nangdo Bootyleg EP from Soulection now on the bandcamp.

Enjoy.

ARP 101 x Elliott Yorke: Fluro Black EP

This is a nice collab. I was sent this quite some time ago and it's finally seeing light of day in the next few. Coming from the good ppl at Donky Pitch is something from the slow funked out ARP 101 in tandem w/ the 1/2 of one of Royalty, Elliott Yorke aka Elliott Yorke.
Knowing where both have drawn inspiration from, this Fluro Black EP is certainly a sum of it's many parts.
Slam is a solo rendition from ARP 101 which is all groove, and funk, ready for the world of the dance floor of popper of lockers, something that would have emerged from a Dam Funk playlist. Polybot unites the two producers, taking up where Slam left off and adding some 2012 beat music feel, inserting heavier synths and sloppy snares. The title track takes us to a 140 dimension - unknown to neither parties - a tempo in step with current dance floor gwannings, that new party bounce. Hi hat triplets and 808 claps keep it all going.

track list

01. ARP 101 x Elliott Yorke - Fluro Black
02. ARP 101 x Elliott Yorke - Polybot
03. ARP 101 - SLAM
04. ARP 101 x Elliott Yorke - Electric Lemonade (digi only)

You can scoop this ARP 101 x Elliott Yorke Fluro Black EP Oct 15th 2012 on wax, as well as on digi which will include a bonus cut. ;)

Morgan Zarate: Broken Heart Collector ft Stevie Neale [VIDEO]

I'll always check for Morgan Zarate. Been a min since his last EP on HyperDub, and mans around the way have been waiting for riddims to drop. I will forever rate Zarate for his work/association w/ Spacek so any news is good news from his camp.
Due out next week is a riddim i've been running ever since it arrived in my in box:
Broken Heart Collector b/w Crey Bey is the new 12" in stores Oct 2nd 2012.
This lead single Broken Heart Collector featuring Stevie Neale is a departure for the calculating drum programming heard on Hookid EP, and a serving of something more big room, more anthemic. Featuring the vocals of rising singer Stevie Neale, the ladies will surely love this riddim, let alone identify with the song's main message.

But Crey Bey takes it back to a grimy, drum heavy instrumental riddim that I have loved from him, for certain mans that might try to run a verse or 2 double time.
Either way, this new HyperDub 12" from Morgan Zarate a great single with the best of both worlds on one shiny piece of wax.
Broken Heart Collector ft Stevie Neale b/w Crey Bey is in store Oct 2 2012.

Robert Glasper feat DOOM: LIVE

A show that took place yesterday in London as part of the iTunes Festival. The 2 1/2 hr show by Robert Glasper featured many cats on deck: Phonte, Lalah Hathaway, Lionel Loueke to name a few. One such guest was eternally enigmatic DOOM himself - the actual real DOOM. Either way, I archived the show for self, but enjoy the Doom recording, as he goes into Figaro and Rhinestone Cowboy.

Nosaj Thing: Eclipse/Blue

YES.

I was just telling my man how Nosaj thing was being slept on. But this might also be a little biased from me. I rawked with him like... 3/4 times already and have been spellbound every time. I love his sets and sound. And now, after what has seemed like a few years doing dates and refining his live a/v, he's back with a new single on Innovative Leisure - a 10" in fact.

My man from iL sent me Eclipse/Blue feat Kazu Makino (Blond Redhead) a few weeks back and... [insert Edvard Munch painting here]. For some of you who might actually read my writing, i've been saying how beat cats are making that transition to vocals, and I couldn't love it more. Plus I'm kid of a sucker for vocalists (and female vocalists)... ;). This tenebrous track's tempo races like a beating heart during a dramatic car chase, backwards down a dark road. Wait, this looks familiar.
In all seriousness, this is a fantastic track and I for one can't wait for the new record.

This Eclipse/Blue 10" from Nosaj thing will be in stores Oct 2nd 2012.

Enjoy.

YoggyOne: Canopée

I recall coming across this french producer a few years back as he rolled out a great series of 12" which featured collabs with some of his faves. I scooped a few then simply overlooked the op to post about it. Tisk tisk. My bad.
Either way, French born YoggyOne just released a new LP via the good ppl over at Eklektik Records. Canopée is a 13 track record oozing w/ sloppy unquantized drums, syrupy synths, and instances of smooth rap, contrasted with laboured lyrics warbling over slow beat driven phrases . YoggyOne, an accomplished and studied musician, delivers a mostly gloomy but fun album deserved of multiple listens.

The Canopée LP is out now.

Say wrd.

Knxwledge: Klemintine Taype

Yup. I've said the same before. This dude is non stop. But, why even slow down? You remember how Nas said it.
Either way, our fave East coast transplant Knxwledge has released yet another LP for the masses, and this is still in light of the All City LP that has been delivered and is getting ready for it's release - and I heard it's a banger. Sheeeeeeit.
Knxwledge's productivity is rivalled only by a happy FoxConn workers who just got a raise. Nutso.
Klemintine Taype, the 11 track piece dropped sometime overnight and is fresh out the over - with already 1k likes. wow.

B. Bravo & Teeko: The Starship Connection EP [VIDEO]

Frite Nite.

Been way too long since I've touched on this Bay area band of beat and bass fanatics. But so happens to be that RBMA alum B Bravo and Teeko have released an EP entitled Starship Connection, on the Frite Nite imprint. Say wrd. BMB aka Space Kid: Go ILL [VIDEO]

"In the Ferrari or Jaguar switchin four lanes

The Gaslamp Killer: BREAKTHROUGH

This has been in rotation for a few I must say. After having the EP delivered which featured an exclusive edit of Flange Face, the long awaited début from Low End Theory Lieutenant, Brainfeeder Baron Gaslamp Killer was now in my hands.
For those of your familiar w/ GLK's musical penchants, you realize that he's got an affinity for hip hop, bass music/beats and psych rock garnishing spread about liberally. Welcome then, to Breakthrough. Imagine what a young Rush might have done today, say something like 2112 in 2012, if that makes any sense to you.
Throughout Breakthrough, the LP's backdrop of GLK live drums and organic Middle Eastern melodies are supported by the electronic, hip hop infusions on this ingenious mostly instrumental album. The few fabulous songs viva voce, done exclusively by Gonjasufi, offer some great contrast to the LP main focus, with his sinister and abraded voice.
Many more collaborators are present on this record: Cali co-horts Computer Jay, Daedelus and Mophono, to Ann Arbor's Shigeto and label mate Samiyam, to the oft overlooked genius Dimlite.
Faves?? Veins and Holy Mt. Washington just to name a few.

Gaslamp Killer - Breakthrough

Gaslamp Killer - Nissim (with Amir Yaghmai)

Track List:

1. Breakthrough
2. Veins (with Gonjasufi)
3. Holy Mt. Washington (with Computer Jay)
4. Father
5. Critics (with Mophono)
6. Dead Vets (with Adrian Younge & MRR)
7. Flange Face (with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)
8. Fuck
9. Apparitions (with Gonjasufi)
10. Impulse (with Daedelus)
11. Peasants, Cripples & Retards (with SAMIYAM)

Kanye West & R. Kelly [Co Prod by Hudmo]

You don't stop, and you don't quit... This has been sometime in the making but to some of us, it's simply overdue news. Hudson Mohawke as been putting in work and this was certainly going to happen - it was just a matter of time. Recall the Chris Brown song??
The Redman freestyle, and countless mixtapes? Either way, many of us wondered how long it would take for someone on the US side to open their eyes and ears and make something happen. Some of you might recall Hudmo speaking on radio w/ Benji B about wanting to work w/ Jadakiss etc... I guess he wasn't listening. But someone who was listening was Kanye West (which means that Jay Z is prob calling Hudmo now - biting ass cat).
Featuring on this new Cruel Summer LP will be the production of none other than Hudson Mowhake seemingly on 3 track, including the afore tweeted joint w/ Kanye West and R. Kelly - say wrd.

dpeee: Almonds & TEAL

Something that I just came across in the endless maze that is the internet: Almonds & TEAL LP from dpeee. Now, the best part is I feel like I've kicked it with before. Either way, this Almonds & TEAL LP was produced with the rawest of elements. Allow me to quote him:

ALMONDS:

This "MixTape" was made with an SP-404 Using Ableton to multitrack. Synths i used were a ROLAND Gaia, Korg R3, Ensoniq SQ-R synth rack and some very minimal vst use (only 3 tracks). ALL Effects were done with the SP-404 and resampled to record the Entire mix LIVE. i Mixed down and mastered it in Cubase.

TEAL:
some personal shit...
This Album was recorded on the ROLAND SP-404, then mastered and mixed in Cubase then bounced from my Tascam Portastudio 414 MKII 4 Track tape deck. I used Vinyl for all samples and for Bass (except Tracks 3,4,8 and 14) I used the Korg R3 and Roland Gaia. All Cuts performed LIVE by your's truly. - dpeee

You can listen to the rest of the record below.

Man is asking for an honorary fee for $1 (or more) for this whole record. #deal. SHow love.

WD4D x JusMoni: Queen Feel EP / Instrumentals

Something that popped into my inbox via soundcloud. Long story short, an email came in about the Queen Feel EP instrumentals being avail for free... I lol'd at the link that was labeled ghost-trap. So I peeped it... cool riddim but I quickly realized that it was certainly cut to vocals. So, vocals I went looking for - and thank the lord I did: vocals #ftw. Hmmm... Imagine Purity Rings meets TNGHT, meaning imagine the slow plodding cadence and vocals from Purity Rings and the bouncy elements heard coming out of the TNGHT camp, all done the Pac West duo of WD4D and JusMoni on vocal duties. Either way, this has been worth repeated listens from my end. Take All Night (Again) was the beat that 1st caught my attention, and then my applause.

You can listen to the rest of the Queen Feel EP here and cop it for $5, but also can grab the full instrumentals that was made avail for a name your price fee.

Either way, enjoy.

Brownswood electr*c 3

Never deny discovery is what I always say. As such, Brownswood returns. Found in my inbox a few weeks back was the new Brownswood Electr*c 3, another exquisitely curated compilation, the 3rd instalment on the fine comps. Via this wonderful vehicle, we're able to discover new and previously released material from across the globe. As you well know, there's no shortage of music but even the most ardent fan might miss a few releases. As such, Brownswood Electr*c 3 comes in to fill that gap with a healthy dose and known (like Krampshaft) and lesser appreciated bangers along side a few exclusives (as Kidsuke) . The tracklist is as follows:

Tracklist

Krampfhaft - Makin' Magic
Kidsuke - Tiny Concrete Block
Djrum - Lies (feat. Shadowbox)
Lost Twin - Nothing
Anushka - Tried & Tried
Aftawerks - Girl
Plezier - Wild

The Risks - Too Many Y Chromosomes
Pomrad - Hot Rain
BMBxSpaceKid - Labyrinth
Jaded Laur - Scarlett

Dub Phizix feat. Fox - Never Been (electr*c VIP)

Out of the many, a few of my faves where The Risks, Aftawerks and the two tracks below.

Krampfhaft - Makin' Magic

Metabeats - Bootney Farnsworth

Due out September 24th 2012, you can listen to the teaser as it was posted by Brownswood, you can get a taste of the record on a whole.

Karriem Riggins: Together LP

There are few things I question. A Flying Lotus release, a late night txt from Halle Berry, and Karriem Riggins tracks. No doubt. So this will be more like me jumping for joy than anything else. I've been waiting to this record for just about 4 yrs now. I mean, I still refer to the set he did in 2008 at the Stones Throw Hella International event. The beats were banging then, and they never released the full podcast of his set as it was riddled with unreleased bangers. No more.
Together LP was released yesterday via digital, completing the Alone Together LP duology. You see, after living through that set in Miami, I patiently waited for this record to come out - and you can only imagine what it was like hearing it bang live a few yrs ago. Pls refer to the below clip. Peep a young Aloe Blacc, and his reaction when this beat drops (@ 3.01):

And now, the actual track.

Both are from the Together LP. Karriem Riggins has bangers for days, as he and his MPC 3000 continues to put it work, and this Together LP is testament to his Detroit pedigree.

Just scoop it already. For the fans of wax, the physical LP will be out Oct 23rd 2012.

Zodiac EP

Could there be a more intriguing release coming under the radar?? I think not. Let's take a moment to chat Zodiac bka Jeremy Rose. You may not be familiar with his name or nom de plume, but you have been singing along to his work - if not your girl. You see Zodiac was the man responsible for The Weeknd's early works - and some go as far as saying his best - on House Of Balloons (What You Need, Loft Music, The Party & The After-Party). After going separate ways, he was forced to sit along the side lines and watch as The Weeknd's new R&B waves splash onto international shores with the impact of a tsunami. No more.
Zodiac release his debut EP on Vase Records with many a curious ear awaiting to hear. Recently leaked Come ft Jesse Boykins III certainly set the tone: A sedate, sensual song with a slow plodding measure, as JB3 adds libidinous libretto as only he can. #WINNING.
GirlGirlGirl is another one of those melodious and mysterious morceaux, morose but yet amorous (I love these kind of joints). Zodiac rounds off the EP with a few more tracks with more bounce, but I quickly longer for more vocal arrangements. He may have found that void that I have been looking for more vocalists and producers to fill: dark and nebulous works. This Zodiac EP is certainly the start I've been looking for.

Track list

1. GirlGirlGirl
2. Come ft. Jesse Boykins III
3. So Soon We Change
4. Loss Config.
5. 138

You can listen to Come ft Jesse Boykins III here.

Zodiac's EP is out September 24th 2012.

KIDSUKE: Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe

Joining forces are Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe, both accomplished producers, grads of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy - London edition - and both part of the 10th anniversary comp from Project Mooncircle. Together, they have morphed into one as Kidsuke as opposed to the multi syllabic alternative. But don't let the sobriquet fool you: the diminutive title carries a massive weight. Mature and complex drum riddims are aligned with playful and uncomplicated melodies creating delightful dichotomy in the their debut LP's delivery.

From future bass, beats, downtempo and even [gulp] dubstep, all are well represented in this forthcoming LP. Due out Novembver 2nd 2012, you can stream the lead track Tiny Concrete Block, and even download this LP promo mix - both below.

Stay tuned and hit Project Mooncircle for more info, or hit their bandcamp to pre order.

Enjoy.

Ohbliv: Gawdhour

I've been slow posting Ohbliv goodness - inexplicably. But here's my atonement. Ohbliv has spit out 16 bangers in the classic boom bap form, via the good ppl at HW&W. It's funny as having worked in fashion for years, we talk about the 90s making a return in the textile world - I believe some of that will stand in the music world. Like Dilla once said "Takin it back to the MF cassette." No doubt. In this world where hip hop is being re define (mistakenly) by young ass cats who think that chopped R&B loops over 140/70 is the new hip hop, GTFOH. Where's the boom bap?? Where are those smooth breaks?? Not saying any of that new stuff isn't good music, but it's not really hip hop like it was birthed. Either way, listen to Ohbliv's goodness GAWDHOUR, certified kicks and loops, in stores now.

Enjoy.

Mala In Cuba

I've been listening to this for a few weeks now, and all I can say is: Amazing. This is great on so many levels. Allow me to expound freely. The surprise that was the this fusion of lively cuban tempos, colourful horns and percussion aligned to the bas of south london (as Mala put it himself) has been a bit of a gawd send.
Allow me to expound. In a climate that saw a sudden free fall of dubstep, and a need to original dubstep producers now refer to their sound as bass music - if it were acknowledged at all, there was going to be a need for someone to take the same risk in fusing sounds that birthed dubstep some years back.
Enter Mala of dmZ. In a chance offer, he was asked by Gilles Peterson to travel with him to Cuba to learn more of Cuban music with the opportunity to record a full record.
What has resulted an LP entitled Mala In Cuba: music for the learned, the dubstep and bass music graduate. Imagine the traditional and classic cuban conga song and rhythm, and the underpinning of the the Mala madness. Watch this little featurette on the Mala in Cuba project.

And this 1st single sounded something like this:

Mala - Cuba Electronic from brownswood recordings on Vimeo.

This Mala in Cuba is due in stores Sept 11th 2012 and can be pre ordered/scooped on Brownswood or iTunes.

In the mean time, stream the majority of the LP here below.

Dibiase: Throwbacks

Nothing but those classic kicks and snares. That's what LA's Dibiase hits you with on this set of tracks that go back like mock turtlenecks. Again, Dibiase's sound is clearly certifies him a student of the game and does it for the new school cat, like he brings that swing for that cat still in timbs. No doubt. If you listen closely, you can even hear 2Pac... All 11 tracks are avail for $5. SHOW LOVE. You can listen to all of it below, and buy it here.

Flying Lotus: Until The Quiet Comes Film [VIDEO]

We are just under 1 month away from one of those inflection points in time and music where we all stop and admire works.
Until The Quiet Comes, Flying Lotus' potentially most anticipated record will see light of day world wide and might just set a new standard. Leading to that moment, we have a teaser, and quasi trailer for the coming opus, directed by Khalil Joseph (Aloe Blacc, Shabazz Palaces, Shafiq Husayn), all set in Los Angeles California. His two loves are beautifully merged in this 3min some trailer.

Music in order of appearance:

See Thru To U (feat Erykah Badu)
Hunger (feat Niki Randa)

Fulgeance: Mini Club

In between touring EU with DJ Soulist as Souleance, and cooking up a storm with this succulent and mouthwatering plates (la belle vie mec!), Fulgeance was diligently crafting his new indie EP, Mini Club. The author of Low Club (recall that??) and the purveyor of that club bounce and tempo, performing live on 2 MPCs has released an EP full of synths and swing. With a clear movement to the dance floor, the way the sound has been over run w/ trap, it's nice to hear some club bounce that's not all 16T/32T hi hats. One of my faves is the below GR8 MMNT

Another fave of mine is Lemon Curd, and can you can catch it and the rest of the Mini Club EP on his soundcloud.

Enjoy!

heRobust: Screw Loose

Been a min since I ran into ATL's heRobust, but today is the release of his new EP, Screw Loose, coming from SF's Muti Music.
What I always loved from heRobust were his melodies and slow flow, though this ep is seemingly coming in more glitchy than I recall his past material to be - likely the reason it landed on Muti. Either way, you can peep the whole Screw Loose EP in it's entirety including Bandana Pancakes here below.

You can scoop the EP online on Beatport and/or iTunes.

Bleep Podcast 056 Featuring Lucky Me [DWNLD]

... Well, more like a mini label focus. The well curated Bleep podcast series has just seen the release of #56, and DJ Rags features a short interview w/ Dom of Lucky Me as they talk in the few mins they had, start of the collective to current state.
With that said, you get to peep some unreleased gems from the camp. Just as importantly, you get to hear some of the newest sounds, all available from Bleep and their online shop. Great job as always.

Digital Diamonds: Jonwayne + Scoop DeVille

In a new side project, Jonwayne of Stones Throw has teamed up w/ fellow Cali cat Scoop DeVille (great name btw) to for the Digital Diamond duo.
This *side stuff* has resulted in a melancholic and morose track which features holoKurt aka Kurt Cobain in a posthumous feature, a track called In Spite. Huh??? Yup. Take it in.

This was a free download capped at 100, so maybe this is floating around.

Enjoy.

The lead single has been streaming for a few days, to wondrous acclaim. I've been listening to the whole EP for a few now. More on that in the coming days. ;)

Either way, you can pre order the EP as well as the 7" now, due out Oct 30th on Urbnet and in the meantime, stream the above title track.
