Outlook Festival: 2011 [VIDEO]

In what will be the start of the 2012 campaign, the good ppl at the Outlook Festival, just days after releasing the early confirmations for their 2012 lineup, dropped a 8 min teaser video with footage from the 2011 show. Ah man, for the ones that I've have spoken to in the past, you know how much I live and breathe for festivals. Sun, sounds and high spirits are what drive a man still. These images are pretty much in line with all that I heard - esp from Alexander Nut. TopWow. Well, you can make your plans as well. Make sure to hit the Outlook Festival for updates.

Royalty: Promo Trailer [VIDEO]

Something from the Royalty camp. The duo drop a quick promo video to a track from the earlier EP. Do remember that the Purple Nights EP is out now, and is a must grab in my books - just lovely riddims, in what they call new boogie. Anyhow, stay tuned Toronto....

Brainfeeder: 12 Track Sampler [DL]

Feels good to be back on the lap.

Just back from California, where where westerly winds were blowing form woofers and music was wonderful. Needed that. Saw a gang of ppl there, from Blu, to Exile, Bilal, Gary Bartz, Aloe and even saw Tokimonsta on her Bday. Speaking of Brainfeeder, the premiere Cali purveyor of niceness has just dropped a 12 track sampler, maybe to celebrate their Worldwide Awards win very recently in LDN as Label Of The Year. And what fine year it was, 2011.

This sampler features the likes of: Thundercat, Martyn, Samiyam, Tokimonsta, The Gaslamp Killer, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, Teebs, Austin Peralta, Matthewdavid, Mono/Poly, and an exclusive download from Lapalux. For those who follow Brainfeeder religiously, these tracks will gave a ring of familiarity. Those new to this..... welcome (in a Kobe voice)

In any case, you can enjoy this sampler - which has been rapidly making it's rounds.

Nocando: Hollywood (Ras G Remix) [DL]

Nocando, the man involved in Low End Theory, Flash Bang Grenada, and HellFyre Club label among other things had a song refixed by the head of the ASP. Coming from his EP Zero Hour, this originally reggae rooted riddim has been re-edited in a dubby version by your man Ras G.

Velvet Montaya: Get You A Mistress [DL]

Just that type of record that Soundcloud is proficient at: hidden and buried gems. Got this email a hot minute ago from this Velvet Montoya thought a mistress?? The title and artwork alone made me think - love how this dude thinks. Oh yea, love the name too. But more than anything, the gritty beat is what I love about this. That lo-fi unfinished sh*t. And for real?? How can I not love anything w/ quotes from American Pimp?? Dude gets daps for that alone. Say wrd.

Behind Closed Door v3: 7" Vinyl

The limited Edition 7" from the good ppl responsible for Behind the Closed Door v3 has been released for enjoyment. It features an exclusive track from House Shoes, as well as music from Suff Daddy, Myke Forte, Kelakovski.

Worldwide Awards: LeFtO Recap [VIDEO]

A great recap video by LeftO of Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards. Le sigh. I'll need to make my way out there soon. Until then, I'll live vicariously through LeftO and his lens.

Shouts to Peggy. Great job.

I.N.T.: Loops N Shit [DWNLD]

From a dutch producer i've not heard enough of.... I have a few releases from I.N.T. in the library, and a few of you may have heard me play some joints, but I do believe that I need to get my hands on more. Holland has been the land of some great producers in this space and I.N.T. has been one of them.
He's just released a mix of break, beats, edits and loops assembled from his very own collection of wax spanning all continents and styles. Always nice to hear new and fresh breaks.
You can scoop that here or stream it below, and make sure you keep a closer eye on dood. As I should as well.

Outlook Festival 2012: Lineup announced

Amazing. I marvel at the lineups that festival programmers are able to put together in EU. Nothing of the sort on this side of the pond. Alas, I still have a dream. Nonetheless, the good ppl at the Outlook Festival have released the early confirmations for this years festival's in Croatia.

You can read the full list here. Time to make plans.

Darkhouse Fam: In & Out EP [DWNLD]

Right from Cardiff come a dynamic duo that I have run my mouth about in the past out here, and much of that great music is now going to make it out on a new EP. Coming from the good ppl over at Earnest Endeavours is the In & Out EP by the Darkhouse Fam.
After staying relatively quiet for the last few and some releases left and right including the iconic Producers Series from Fat City Recordings, Darkhouse Fam is preparing to drop their most significant release. Featuring the likes of Om'Mas Keith of world famous Sa-Ra, and Vanity Jay, this 7 track release will get that back in the mix with that boom bap that got them the deserved buzz previously.

1. Take On The World feat. Om’Mas Keith
2. Red Leather
3. Sticky Trees (Interlude) feat. Vanity Jay
4. Tartan Paint
5. Snaggletooth
6. Like No Other feat. B. Bravo
7. In & Out (Reprise)

Out Feb 27th, 2012, the In & Out EP will be available in all reputable shops, and certainly online as well.

Here's a mix they did for Dazed Magazine. Hold it down.

813: Splinters of Violet Glasses [VIDEO]

Our fave firefighter 813, has dropped a fresh new vid from his Spectrum Riff EP which sees a digi release today in fact.

You can scoop the EP at your local wax emporium, and online as well. Say wrd.

Madlib Medicine Show w/ Jrocc [VIDEO]

A little something from yesterday's sold out show in Toronto w/ Madlib and J-Rocc. The lineup as I was told was epic, the crowd was deep, and the fans came out from all directions. Good times. More clips to come.

Madlib @ The Great Hall from NOW Magazine on Vimeo.

Sonnymoon: Near Me [VIDEO]

One of my fave bands ahora. The Bostonian tandem Sonnymoon now living in LA just dropped an EP, 2012 with Plug Research. A must check for the fans of turbid textures of electornics, with vocal leads. Witness the live set below for Near Me - an SP555 + a mic = exaltation

Akai Pro Presents MPC FLY [VIDEO]

In a 2 week blitz that saw Akai Pro introduce their new flagship units meant to take them into the new era of production, they had one flip for the fans. Completing the trilogy will be the MPC FLY.

After some early endorsement and investment of the iOS platform with the Synth Station, Akai Pro has now made an additional statement and BOLD move by not only offering a new MPC themed iPad app, but also providing a proprietary controller for the iPad to facilitate the process. Wow. Again, a software dev investment is one thing, but to actually stock a physical item that will solely support the iPad?? Daring. For those who have spoken to me know that I've been a big fan of the tablets/iPad and the opportunity to whip something up + this is where computing power is going.
There are tons of apps out there that have mimicked the MPC, but Luke's father has now returned.
Offered will be an app that will be able to run on both the iPad and iPad2. But the controller has been designed for the iPad2, on paper. Deets are as follows:

● The first MPC designed specifically for iPad 2
● Fitted compartment for iPad 2 provides fully integrated portable MPC solution
● 16 backlit genuine MPC pads with MPC Note Repeat & MPC Swing
● Works seamlessly with the MPC App: sequence & sample editing, effects, EQ and more
● Create beats on the go and transfer to a Mac or PC for further mastering
● Double-hinged case sits upright, lies flat or closes for transport
● Compatible with virtually any Core MIDI app
● Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
● Charges iPad when plugged into wall power

● Sequence four tracks simultaneously: four-track mixer built in
● Built in sound library of samples and drum kits
● Record and overdub sequences and create and edit your own Programs
● 16-Levels mode: play one sample at 16 levels of attack, velocity, length, and tuning
● Note variation slider allows you to manipulate attack, velocity, length, and tuning as you play
● Built-in effects: delay, bit crusher, master compressor/limiter
● Time correct: 1/8 note – 1/32T with variable Swing setting
● Note Repeat: 1/8 note – 1/32T timing
● Sample using internal mic or line-in and trim and categorize samples
● Sample from your iPod library with turntable interface
● Share on SoundCloud, Facebook or twitter
● Supports WIST, Wireless Sync Start protocol from Korg
● Supports AudioPaste

For all those going to NAMM, enjoy as Akai Pro plans to have the full lineup on hand to mess with.
For the rest of us, more info can be found at the MPC FLY page.

Om Unit, Jay 5ive & Kromestar: Get Darker [VIDEO]

3h30mins of a live show at the brand new Get Darker studios . Om Unit, Jay 5ive and Kromestar are mixing live with the good vibes of Mr G Double toasting the mic. This almost Anti Social show live. Nice. As usual, big riddims, exclusives... shouts to Kevin McPhee for pointing that one out.
Hope you have some time to kill. But this is a massive show. Enjoy.

Coming from the XO camp (Waddup Kev) comes another souldier from the toronto crew that has been redefining the Toronto sound, throwing up exes and ohs. Monday, I was at my man's house who was playing this in the house. Totally peaked my interest and popped open his lap to see what was playing. Enter DROPXLIFE. Thick fog, blurred, muddled drums and melodies, plodding and totally unhurried riddims dominate this little release. Clams Casino is a name that might be bandied around in drawing comparisons.
Just make sure you respect the etiquette: 2 puffs and pass.
You can scoop it over at The Weeknd's Tumblr and take it in.

B-Ju - Prozac People [VIDEO]

Back working w/ the Error Broadcast family, is B-Ju. After his Dog Day EP which dropped in 2010, and getting an armful of remix work, he's back w/ his Prozac People EP featuring 4 new tunes as well as 3 reworks, making this release as complete as a balanced meal. ;). Due out Jan 23 2012, Prozac People is a synth heavy record straddling lines between hip hop and footwork, w/ double time riddim ridden up and down this release. Treats come in the way of reworks by friends of B-Ju and Error Broadcast: Monolithium, 813 and eLan. Catch some words from B-Ju himself as he took a few to speak w/ Error Broadcast.

DJ Adlib: Hi Hat Club v6, Haus & Garten [DWNLD]

The return the GER's famed producers series from Melting Pot Music. This time, we have a certain DJ Adlib with the Hi Hat Club v6, Haus & Garten. Brought to the mic on this record are Black Spade, Declaime, Frank Nitt and Planet Asia, a quasi all west coast sets of guests, though he does share the space w/ a certain Hubert Daviz form around the way. Taking his 10+ yrs of production experience, his expertise shows in the way this still predominantly instrumental plays. This is a hip hop record from top to bottom, and one that finds a nice balance between vocal and beat. Nice. You can download the lead track from the Hi Hat Club v6, Haus & Garten.

Hi Hat Club v6, Haus & Garten by DJ Adlib is available now in digital, and will be shipping vinyl Jan 20 2012. You can buy the album on the bandcamp, as well as the previous Hi Hat Clubs LPs.

BCD3: Behind Closed Doors 3 [VIDEO]

Something new from the franchise that at times has the ring of an old school porn film w/ Nina Hartly or Ginger Lynn. But in a ironic twist, some of the content might have cats shoot a load the same way. LOL.
In the 3rd instalment of a DVD dedicated to the producers and the process, AB0181 and Kosyne have put out another compilation video last month, this time with highlights of a trip from the UK to America.
Appearances by: !llmind, Khrysis, Houseshoes, Rhettmatic, J.Bizness, Aspect One, Samiyam, Kelakovski, Myke Forte, Mr. Thing, Suff Daddy and a trip inside Native Instruments HQ. Nice.
Almost 90 mins of interviews, production techniques, studio tours, the contest that's always priceless for a producer, be it he's getting his feet wet or has hella skin in the game (pause).
The DVD comes with an exclusive beat cd full of bangers from all the producers and there's also a lim edition pressing that will include a 7" Vinyl, exclusively designed T-Shirt and a few more goodies.

You can order it here, and they do ship worldwide. Say wrd. Shouts to Andy for this one.

Bonobo: Black Sands Remixed [DWNLD]

You know your boy loves these. Remix records. And this is a full LP. Again, this takes me back to days where there were many more of these being pushed out, but I guess the new economy wouldn't allow it like yesteryear. Nonethless, glad to see ppl still care to make these happen/work.
Bonobo's Black Sands was a record I actually ran quite a bit, w/ some of my faves being Kiara, Stay The Same as well as the title track. But to see a remixed full length come out?? #FTW. So, we have a Black Sands Remixed teaser 12" dropping for the tastemakers 1st in late Jan, with the album dropping Feb 13th 2012 in UK and 1 week later in US. Invited on remix duties the likes of Lapalux, Cosmin TRG, Eglo's Floating Points & ARP 101, all world Mark Pritchard, Mike Slott, Blue Daisy and who might the hardest working dude right now, Lucky Me's Machinedrum. I also have a Letherette and Funkineven remixes which are LP wax only exclusives. Nice.

Album Tracklist

Prelude (Lapalux's Finger on the Tape Remix)
The Keeper (Banks Remix)
Kiara (Cosmin TRG Remix)
Eyesdown (Floating Points Remix)
Eyesdown (ARP 101 Remix)
Eyesdown (feat. Andreya Triana & DELS)
All In Forms (FaltyDL Remix)
Ghost Ship
Stay The Same (Mark Pritchard Remix)
Eyesdown (Machinedrum Remix)
All In Forms (Mike Slott Remix)
Stay The Same (Blue Daisy 'Not Quite the Same' Remix)
Brace Brace
Black Sands (Duke Dumont's 'Grains Of Sand' Reconstruction Edit)

LP exclusives

All In Form (Letherette remix)
Kiara (Funkineven Remix)

Bonobo made sure there's certainly a little something for everyone on this album. Beat cats will feel it, some 140 bizness will keep the bass music mandem cool, we have some dancefloor bizness w/ ppl like Cosmin TRG (big up) and, if you want a more frenetic pace - say no more. Machinedrum comes in at a footwork riddim to seal that deal. Courtesy of Bonobo, enjoy the Machinedrum single free of charge, and peep the ARP 101 re edit as well. More to come.

You can get more info on Bonobo's site, as well as the preorders. Bonobo's Black Sands Remixed Comes out Fab 13th 2012.

Badu: Rescued From The Fire

If her house was burning, and she could only save one record, Erykha Badu reveals to RBMA which one in this quick clip.

Nice. And yours?? Mine?? Master Of Puppets: Metallica.

DVA: Pretty Ugly LP

Sooooo looking fwd to this record. Between trying to listen to as much of his morning program on Rinse FM - which is now no longer, as he's producing FT - to listen to the odd release and remixes he's put out, to the HyperDub special he's doing once a month on Rinse FM as well, I try to catch as much as DVA's work as possible. But the March 20th 2012 date will be one to bookmark. DVA will be dropping that long awaited full length, which will feature a number of vocalists, over some of his special time signatures and riddims, the types he was maligned for from the grime guys who were stuck at 140, and refused to move the pitch control. But the tracklist has been revealed as well as the artwork a few weeks ago. It looks something like this.

01. Reach The Sun
02. Just Vybe feat Fatima
03. Polyphonic Dreams
04. Pretty Ugly feat Cornelia
05. Bare Fuzz
06. Madness feat Vikter Duplaix
07. Fire Fly feat Zaki Ibrahim
08. Why U Do feat AL
09. The Big 5ive
10. Eye Know Ft Natalie Maddix
11. 33rd Degree feat Muhsinah

The LP features 3 RBMA grads in Muhsinah, Fatima, and Cornelia, South African/Canadian Zaki Ibrahim as well as the silvery voice of Vikter Duplaix who's track Madness was picked as lead with a video as well.

New to DVA?? Here's the Resident Adviser podcast/interview w/ DVA, as he speaks on his come up from getting into radio @ Rinse FM, to getting up w/ HyperDub and all things in between.

Scratcha DVA RA Podcast Feb 2011

Mark Pritchard: Wiley's Scar & Money Man

Is this a Wiley post or Mark Pritchard news?? Either way, this all comes back to a story I recall Mark Pritchard telling. Wiley was in Oz doing dates some years back, and I guess that he and Mark linked up to talk about/record a few tracks quickly as he was doing dates. He ends up blowing off the dates to keep recording w/ Mark - leaving the show promoters and goers high and dry. Ha.
Well, seeing that some goodies came out of the production sessions, I'm not mad. ;)
These songs have been completed for quite some time. In fact, I've had Scar for so long that I was virtually positive this was out, as some of you might have heard it from me in the past. In anycase, Wiley's work w/ Mark Pritchard has resulted in something in a more classic 4/4 hip hop 90some bpm type bizness. Both Scar and Money Man are to big riddims, that let Wiley just be at his best: uncluttered riddims so you can hear Wiley run his lyrics like the mic mans he is.
His new LP, Evolve Or be Extinct will be out on Big Dada Jan 19th 2012. Mark your calendars (dbl entendre yes).

Om Unit Remixes: All City 7"

Though this might be described as a very early preview, Om Unit and All City will be releasing what I think will be an exclusive 7", set for March 2012. Om Unit has remixed tracks from the All City LA series from Daedelus and Om'Mas Keith. Maintaining momentum in what has been a fantastic 2011, Om Unit rebuilds the two tracks, brandishing his Cosmic Bridge wand over the stems, and delivering 2 dazzling tracks, entirely rework in style and feel. Still very early, but keep your eyes and ears peeled for this.

Daedelus - Vous Etes Stereo (Om Unit remix)
Om'Mas Keith - Girl Is A Player (Om unit remix)

Introducing The Akai Pro MPC Studio

In what can be described only as a radical alteration, a transformation of the culture at Akai, we have now been presented another part of their plan to reclaim supremacy in the space of production landscape. They recently unveiled the first part of the plan just a few days past with the MPC Renaisance, and now are showing us a new player on the team.
Overnight, the hardworking ppl at Akai have introduced the newest piece of the puzzle, in their multi pronged approach to reach all the needs of the 2012 producer. The MPC Studio has now been unveiled and, this unit might in fact be their answer to the Maschine.

● Fuses legendary MPC production with the processing power of your computer
● Compact design is less than 1” thin and fits easily into a laptop bag
● MPC SOFTWARE for Mac & PC with 64-track sequencing capability
● 16 backlit genuine MPC pads, legendary MPC workflow & MPC Swing
● USB-powered with low-profile knobs and brushed aluminum body
● Large LCD screen allows you to make tracks without having to look at your computer
● Four touch-sensitive knobs provide enhanced MPC software control

On paper, this seems like the MPD transformed into a proprietary controller for the Akai Pro production software, which is just as much part of the retooling, coming from the company that has been staunch supporter of all things hardware based re: the MPC series. So again, this is meant to plug back to your Mac or PC as you work through with the 64 tracks enabled app.
The sleek look, and now much thinner casing makes things a lot more attractive, INDEED. Wondering if this might also signal the arrival of a new form factor for the MPD. Nonetheless, this is all being unveiled on the heels of NAMM in SoCal. They will surely garner a large slice of the attention that weekend and we look fwd to additional details (like price esp) as they come.

For more info on this unit, pls hit Akai Pro and their MPC Studio page for more.

Producers #3 Part 3: Dibiase & Danny Drive Thru

I'm not even sure where I was... I may have missed #2 on this one. But I'd been waiting so long, I may have forgotten. Nonetheless, one of my fave series was certainly the famed Producers one from the good ppl over at Fat City Recordings. The 1st to were total classics and the 3rd was slowly coming together (or I was out to lunch - one of the two). Nonetheless, the 3rd instalment has now been leaked and it looks like we have some Danny Drive Thru (love that name) and some classic Dibiase to speak of.
The 4 cut 12" features 3 from a certain Danny Drive Thru, ranging from the hi-fi electronic dance floor tempo, to the lo-fi hilarity of the Virtua Ante Up, 8 bit beat down remake (which has been conveniently re-released on this 12" in case you slept on the #2). As well, maintaining his relationship w/ the label is Dibiase with a smooth Green Llama track for his ardent audience. Nothing but goodness each and every time for that dood. Nothing to say outside of that.

The 12" will be released on Feb 6th 2012. Pls hit up the Fat City Recordings site for additional deets.

GB / Gifted & Blessed: 7 in 24 / Dogon

Brilliance. I can still recall that summer set @ NTS Radio.... Coming from the cat who's got an impressive catalog of great depth and breadth is the 1st release of 2012 from All City and Gifted & Blessed, known as well as GB. The new 12" 7 in 24 / Dogon will feature more of his sagacious sounds, that maturity in music that could only be masterfully delivered by habituated maestros - and that GB is. This 12" features palpitating basslines and beat, adjoining bit crushed melodies, performed with famous 808 kits. Whilst 7 in 24 might be written in a steadier measure, Dogon pushes both pace and patterns.

7 in 24 / Dogon will be out Jan 23rd 2012 on wax w/ download code in all fine record shops. Say wrd.

Onra: Keep On Loving Me [DWNLD]

A freebie from Onra and the good ppl at All City Records. The 7" Nipponese exclusive which is now sold out, has been released as a free download.

Lo Phi: Truck Stop Love [DWNLD]

Something new, something fresh from the Austin's fave (IN)Sect Records. Dropping Jan 13th 2012 from an LP called Slamma Jamma from Lo Phi, I was expecting to hear something from Clyde Drexler. LOL. Nonetheless, this is something interesting form Lo Phi and (IN)Sect Records. Stay tuned.

heRobust: Awful Session [VIDEO]

A little something from homie heRobust as he readies for his forthcoming EP Morning After. Nice.

Finest Ego: German Austrian Swiss Comp [DWNLD]

Continuing in their famed Worldwide beat compilation, The good ppl at Project Mooncircle released on Christmas day the German Austrian Swiss (GAS??) beat comp, introducing us to a new league of producers in that corner of the world.

Again, many names here I've come to know in the last few years - Brenk, Hubert Daviz, Comfort Fit, Robot Koch, Suff Daddy and many others, but the 30+ track comp also has some lesser known lads who may have yet to make their mark internationally, and have now been offered a stage to shine on. For anyone who's been following this comp series, this is again a must own as it keeps w/ my long time assertion that the music has been cared for worldwide and the talent is in all corners. You can listen to and download the sampler here below.

The comp is out now. Enjoy.

Finest Ego: Mike Gao & Daisuke Tanabe Faces 12 [DWNLD]

2nd releases in this Faces 12" will be the double A side 12" Project Mooncircle from Mike Gao & Daisuke Tanabe. Due out Feb 17th 2012, this release will be a follow up to the 1st which dropped last year, among the several releases from the beat science supportive imprint.
Teaming up what I consider are two music academics, we have a 10 track release from Mike Gao & Daisuke Tanabe, which plays more like an EP allowing each for 5 tracks to display much of their prowess. The result is a quasi esoteric, and even pedantic production delving more in the electronic than the hip hop swing - all welcomed. The 12" plays like an exploration into experimental, combining drum and beat around a central melody. A must listen to the fans. You can listen to and download the sampler below.

The 12" will be out Feb 17th 2012 from Project Mooncircle. Please hit their site for more info.

Eric Lau: Yesterday (feat. Guilty Simpson, Fatima & Olivier Daysoul)

Sitting here listening to the The Mission EP, trying to contain my excitement. In part for anything Guilty Simpson related, and more importantly, it marks Eric Lau's return to what I felt was a strength in hip hop production. The Mission EP features 8 tight tracks, with the second buzz single from the highly anticipated EP getting leaked just 2 days ago.

Yesterday features Guilty Simpson, Eglo's Queen Fatima & Olivier Daysoul. The rough and real raps of Detroit's baritone badman Guilty Simpson are soulfully balanced by a Eric Lau's smooth silvery piano sample, and the harmonies of Fatima of ODS on chorus duties. 48hrs, 4200 plays and 40 some comments at the time of writing, and the ppl have spoken: dope. This was the sum of the parts as they were added and the solution was just has fresh.

The Mission EP by Eric Lau will be out Feb 3rd, and can be pre-ordered on the Kilawatt Music site.

Rarebit: Emergence [DWNLD]

They strike again. Coming from the Los Angeles asylum of avant-guarde, Non Projects readies it's newest release, introducing the newest LP from Rarebit, Daizo.

Maintaining the modus operandi of the institution, Rarebit prepares to drops a dextrous LP based in electronic, with undeniable elements of jazz, with at times imperceptible rhythms or tempos, but all coalescing in a unison. Leading off the campaign is a single Emergence. Piano, strings, percussions, all seemingly playing at their own pulse, but orchestrated and led adeptly by Rarebit in what is a volatile and frenetic track.
Daizo is due to drop from Non Projects in Feb 29th 2012, and the Emergence single is available now for download below

Madlib x J-Rocc x mymanhenri: Toronto Jan 19th 2012

Could there be any better news?? I got the confirmation call a few nights ago. This is essentially a MOVE reunion (for those who remember that). Jan 19th 2012. Mark your calendars, and stay tuned. I have a surprise for all next week.

You can RSVP in the Facebook Event page. Chat soon.

Morpheground: Enfuse [DWNLD]

Real talk. When I 1st started this beta blog (and yes I call it beta as I feel like I've never launched it), one of the 1st cats I came across was this dude Morpheground. He had sent me this BANGER that do this day, when I play it, guys are just like... WTF IS THIS? Oh this?? My man Morpheground from Italy put this one out. Betweem hearing a ridiculous beat playing, and the words italy, these guys are floored. So, he always gets carte blanche when he sends joints down. So when he emailed me during the holidays, between throwing my cousin's daughter in the air w/ one hand, I answered his email in my other w/ the barackberry™. ;)
Back with record to start the new year of 2012 is Morpheground, with this his new LP ENFUSE.

Enfuse takes again classic style and feel, the ones that I recall so well from his songs like The Most High, and Revolutions, into this LP. Enfuse definitely delineate his deeds as certified and official, with a catalog now spanning 4yrs+ (damn, that long ya??). Again, not the name all have known in the past, but one that need be in your library. The beats are undeniable, and i def look fwd to hearing more from Morpheground this year.

Enfuse is available for a name your price basis now, over at his Bandcamp.

Leonard Dstroy: Attention Deficit High Definition [DWNLD]

Huh?? what? Leonard Dstroy, who put out a banger of LPs a little while back, is kicking off the 2012 brand new. Though he emailed me during the holidays with the full LP and big thanks for that, I needed to start my new years by dropping this in my reader's hands. In fact, I got the call from both Leonard Dstroy and Chief at Elm & Oak, Alex B aka Paper Diamond. Presenting Attention Deficit High Definition.

This Attention Deficit High Definition is just that. This nine track release was written like 9 chapters, each being a little novella it's self. Huh?? what?? Each track was produced by weaving even more tracks together, beats within beats, tracks within track. Huh?? What?? Could this have been a 80 track record? Yes it could have. That might be the only certainty outside of this one: This is dope. It plays like 4/4 bangers from back in the day - that raw sh*t. You can hear that Leonard Dstroy was a student of golden era, infusing that boom bap that's oft missing from some of the beat tapes circulating, quoting and sampling from classic material forgotten or even unknown to these younger and greener beat writers. SAY WRD. YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE. lol. No seriously. Save that Ritalin for someone else, as attention deficit never sounded so good.

You can download Attention Deficit High Definition from the Elm & Oak site here. Here's a little passage from Attention Deficit High Definition for all to enjoy.

MPC: NY Times Story

A few weeks ago the NY Times reported on on the iconic MPC, and some of it's more celebrated users, notably l'enfant terrible, drummer turned MPC Maestro Araab Muzik. Figures I would post this the same night as the unveiling of Akai Pro's new flagship unit.
Nonetheless, an interesting piece from the most unlikely of sources, though it is tough to cover the MPC's significance in such a short piece, and w/o a single video of an Araab Muzik performance, it might be even harder to comprehend what he exactly does. And of all places like NY, the MPC is as ubiquitous in NY as the nubuk/wheat color Timb in the 90s. In a discussion I was having w/ a friend, I felt that Araab Muzik was in his own lane, straddling hip hop, electronic, with a live show that is seldom seen in this beat music scene. So he is now touring excessively, has some responsibility for the MPC's ongoing interest, and is being written up in the NY Times. Cheers.
But as I mentioned previsouly, it's nearly impossible to chat beat music w/o the MPC. Impossible. Regardless, enjoy the piece and comment freely.

Akai Pro: MPC Renaissance [DWNLD][VIDEO]

The wait is over.
After what seemed like an eternity to many who had been longing for an update, it arrived minutes after midnight tonight. When it comes to the beat music, the community, it rolls in step, in tandem, in parallel with this unit. Though there had been many versions of the MPC since the MPC 60, one thing was certain - Akai had created a biblical following for the flagship unit, the one that set the bar for production devices with the nearest competitor a distant 2nd. Akai had a total choke hold of the hip hop community, and even some house prodcuers were messing w/ it. Damn. Some like DJ Spinna and the late J Dilla swore by the MPC 3000. Many others like Exile and Black Milk cut their teeth on the 2000. Onra worked his magic on the 1000 and Jamie XX did work on the 500. There were the 2500 and the 5000, but many waited for what they felt was a refresh, a reboot, a Renaissance, and it came tonight.

Sir Froderick x Ohbliv Are Sir-Bliv: Wholly Rollers LP

In an email that came a few days before the end of my little blogcation, Sir Froderic hit me w/ this project that he completed w/ a certain Ohbliv. One thing to be certain of, on paper this is an instrumental comp of the highest grade. Both well respected within this environment of beat production, and a collaboration would at the very least come out like the sum of it's parts.
Not only will this comp have that resiny coating one looks for so you can blow those meaningful thick clouds of smoke, but it's also being offered on cassette, you know - for my real ni**az only. Seriously though, cut in a Madlibian sequence, with some tracks going as short as 30 secs, you get to hear those 3-4 key breaks and loops within the tracks that make the moment extra special. 29 tracks deep, there's tons to take in, and all for a $5.

You can scoop it all at the official Future Science bandcamp site.

Melo-X: Live Drake Re-Edit [VIDEO]

I love this vid, let alone the actual track. Ok. Rewind. Drake LP drops. It features great tracks, and as I'm sure that many were locked into the obvious, but one of my fave featured The Weeknd, and was produced by the homie Doc as well as Illangelo. Loved that Crew Love joint. Enter Melo-X who reinterprets the whole song, in a frenetic and spirited re-edit - all done live. Daps x 2 for that. Aww f*ck it. Enjoy.
