Following the incredible edition w/ Computer Jay, our goods friends @ HVW8 are back w/ another edition, this time w/ long time friend and collaborator Dam Funk, featuring another Los Angeles lord, his honorable tAz Arnorld. The two heavyweights were joined by Thunder Cat, Major, Terrace Martin, Krondon and others on a funk adventure that builds and evolves. The final jam will blow your mind. Well said Ty G, well said.
The Drake Hotel's annual What's In The Box night #5 will be a sick one. Pls see attached:
WITB #5 will feature Hot Flush curator extraordinaire, Scuba. I sadly missed him when I was in Seattle during Decibel Festival, but I guess this was somehow in the cards, as I get to catch him @ my fave venue in Toronto. Expect nuttin but niceness. Consider this a NYE's eve. But I as I just told Xi moments ago (and you WILL be missed my dude), I'm pumped. The deets:

True to their word, they're back. Late last summer, Huess released an EP in set up for what was to be the pièce de resistance later that year, a new EP. FFWD to present, and we've been blessed w/ it's arrival. What it Cost EP
Finely chopped and sequenced vocal phrases push beats past instrumental standards, letting the tracks breath more like actual songs with full melodies, refrains and all. You heard it on the 1st Broke EP, and it carries through on this What it Cost EP. As promised, the EP features remixes from both Fulgeance and Kelpe.
The HuessWhat It Cost EP is now available on digi and as well as wax with the latter containing a bonus beat as well as limited edition packaging for the die hard wax enthusiasts
You can preview the rest of the EP on their bandcamp site. And to boot, they have a mini mix out as we speak for you to load up on the iPod. Say wrd.
Some things are certain: palm trees in sunny LA, idiocy from Sarah Palin and a stolen bike in Toronto. Add to that, bangers from All City.
As 2010 winds down, we are treated to the eighth installment on the famed LA Series. Certain are artwork from B+, and the bangers are courtesy of TOKiMONSTA & new comer Mike Gao.
We all know TOKiMONSTA's resume, but Mike Gao comes to us wearing a producer's cap and an iPhone app developer's as well. We get into that soon. But regardless, the 8 track double snack pack reaffirms LA's boundless talent and again, simply adds to the collectible collection this series has become. Hard to imagine there are 2 more to go. ;)
The release is out now and can be scooper all over the finer eShop, like Boomkat.
Coming to the mind of the good ppl @ Friends Of Friends Music, is the type of comp that makes you smile, and more importantly thankful for friends. FoF has been a rising musique boutique working all ends of this scene we love, as promo, show production but also as a label toting such rising acts as Shlohmo.
Just hours ago, Friends Of Friends Music released a freebie featuring some of heavyweights from the great state of California: Pop Massacre.
What is this?? Well, some of the best from the formidable FoF rolodex were asked to take one of the fave pop songs and remix it as they saw fit. Wow. So you'll get to hear songs from your tender youth (maybe even your parents',) or your sister's iPod, but with a 2011/FoF twist. Love these fun projects. And so will you. What does it look like??
1. Anenon - Wannabe (Spice Girls) -- Non Projects
2. Strangeloop - Wouldn't It Be Nice (Beach Boys) -- Brainfeeder
3. Shlohmo - Pretty Boy Swag (Soulja Boy) -- Friends of Friends
4. DNTEL - Paparazzi (Lady Gaga) -- Sub Pop
5. Asura - Always Be My Baby (Mariah Carey) -- Non Projects
6. Daedelus - I Would Die For You (Prince) -- Ninja Tune/Magical Properties
7. Sahy Uhns - Pieces Of Me (Briitney Spears) -- Proximal
8. Loden - Gimme Gimme (Abba) -- Mush
9. Mexicans with Guns - La Bamba (Ritchie Valens) -- Innovative Leisure/Friends of Friends
10. Groundislava - I Bet I Do (Supa Blanco) -- Friends of Friends
11. The One AM Radio - Take on Me (A-ha) -- Dangerbird
12. Big Spider's Back - Teenage Dream (Katy Perry) -- Circle Into Square
13. My Dry Wet Mess ft. Amir Yaghmai - I Want Her (Keith Sweat) -- Magical Properties
Indeed. An album full of long knives, and short loops. Just what the system needed. And you can take it all in as well. This comp is avail as a free download.
Man, I could make this a hella long post. But I'll not. I will simply say this: this dude grinds.
The man I speak of is Olan from All City. He's been responsible for some big records in the last little whilst, and there's no real sign of slowing down.
The LA Series may be the most heralded, and many might recall the incredible 7x7 series which preceeded, but he's been @ work at his All City shop and label for more than a hot min. With no hesitation, I add that he wield a big beat, and his signings and releases are closely monitored, and certainly enjoyed by many worldwide. And with all of that being said, 2010 has not yet concluded and we still have LA9 + LA10 to drop... oh boy.
So it was only right that Olan stepped out the boardroom tables, and stepped behind Technics tables. Say wrd. To my jubilation, he's put out 2 solid mixes just in time for xmas, courtesy of the good ppl @ Rhythm Incursions. ;). Always nice to peer into the head of label heads. Say wrd.

BTS Radio is back to bless us w/ some quality curation. This time, we have the pleasure of listening to man like Morgan Zarate aka Morgan Spacek, of Spacek fame.
Pffff. That alone should necessitate no other incentive to grab this mix. But more importantly and according to Mr Meza, buried in the mix is Morgan's new 12" Hookid which is set to drop on Hyperdub as aead to his new LP in Feb. Sick.
So for all to enjoy, go grab that mix asap, in all it's splendor in 320. Shouts to Mr Meza. #allday.
For those who recall and even entered the contest, we have a winner. 1st, I must say that as an outsider looking in, I was impressed w/ the amount of submissions. I was speaking to Take a few times, and even HE was pretty pleasantly overwhelmed.
So, with that being said....
Congrats The Clonious! Say wrd. The Viennese virtuoso, RBMA 2007 graduate delivers a torrid tempo banger, and has secured a slot on the Take Remix LP (due in top of 2011) coming from the small pup w/ a deep and massive bark, Alpha Pup.
If you're not him to The Clonious, he's a very talented producer from Austria who's had releases from Ubiquity and has just dropped something new (more of that next week).
Coming out of the Plug Research camp is newness from Exile. In support of the AM/FM (the Radio rmx album) is a new stop animation video which was co directed by Exile and Greg The Dude.
The video also features a bricolage of remixed beats from a California troika: Samiyam, Dibiase & Free The Robots. The result, another great animated piece with a just as formidable soundtrack.
Ummm... I don't know about this one. I heard rumblings of this somewhere online, so it wasn't quite the surprise when it surfaced on a tweet. Love what happening in music right now, and loved what happened during those golden years (which I witnessed 1st hand), but to see them collide such as what i'm hearing below is... ummm... like weird.
Not sure i'm into this. I'll let you be the judge.
** And for the record, I'm pretty sure Hudmo had NOTHING to do w/ this. You can hear that Gilla House just looped the break. [smh]. Anyhow, your turn...
Worldly curators extraordinaire Mochilla are responsible for some amazing art since 1997: photography, audio and video and have done so @ the beat of their own drum. Quietly working away in the west w/ some of the very artists that have gone to inspire many globally. I def believe their work is @ the center of the artistic power shift that has taken place in Los Angeles and are def due an immense amount of credit.
To celebrate an official decade of work (more if you care to ask them) is a mix done by partner Eric Coleman facilitated by Vtech, running down some of the riddims that have inspired them over this 10 yr span. So here it is, in it's 1st installment.
In a sort of a recap of their 2nd tour of Japan, the Low End Theory soldiers documented the tour as they crisscrossed through Sapporo, Tokyo, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka and Takasaki. Ahhh... maybe next year I can make it out.
The soundtrack? Nosaj ThingQuest (Low Limit Remix), DibiaseEternia, TOKiMONSTACheese Smoothie, TeebsWhile You Doooo, Jonwayne Fireflies, Young MontanaSacre Cool.
No news is better than Mike Slott news. Really. Some of the most delightful and (IMHO) overlooked genius out here in this space that is this music.
Moments ago, I get an email highlighting the last show of the year for Mike, and this is the kind I absolutely hate missing: small, intimate setting, a soft seater, no rowdy club/bar bizness - just music.
NY, I hope you can make it out to see my man. As Mike Slott articulates it so eloquently:
I'd like to invite you all to celebrate (?!) the end of 2010 together and to look forward to many wonderful musical and life experiences in 2011. With that said please join me for my final gig of the year...
Here are the deets:
Mike Slott - an intimate show.
December 9th 2010 @ The Stone the corner of avenue C and 2nd street
$10 - $5 for students.
This track is simply bananas. Heard it on Alex Nut's show this past weekend, and was pointed and after asking on twitter for some insight, I was kindly pointed in the right direction. Good Look Ben.
In any case, what we have is a Jamie xx rework of a track called NY Is Killing Me. This is the first song from We're New Here, Jamie xx's collaborative reworking of 13 tracks from the Gil Scott-Heron I'm New Here LP which was released earlier this year.
I don't cover much rap (not none, but just very little - since there are many who do to my pleasure), but I do show love to homies and cover stuff I like/love.
Sometime ago, I was discussing that for all the beat music that comes out, a funny take would be to releases remixes that would feature MCs, as the alt version: main - instrumental, rmx - vocal. I still like the idea.
So, just over 24hrs ago, Cali skull cracking Dibiase put out a track featuring 2 of his (and mine) homies: Devonwho & Blu.
For those who recall Devonwho'sFundraiser v1: Thumbtracks, and the subsequent rmx LP that then dropped, you will remember this beat: fedoraworm (dibiase's microwave flip)
This might be one of the best edits that I have seen of his visual exhibit to date. It's been just over 1 year since he 1st premiered his visual show @ Red Bull Megahurtz in Montréal, where it was officially still in beta, but Nosaj Thing has been diligently refining it with the close assistance of one miss Julia Tsao (Adam G, where you @?).
Regardless, released just a few days back, here's Nosaj Thing's performance as it was witnessed and presented @ the Swiss Mapping Festival.
Looking fwd to catching this new edit of the show very soon. Enjoy.
What is likely my fave song on Flying Lotus' Cosmogramma, one that demanded a wheel @ the listening party, has now been released as a video (that I got to watch mid Oct in fact - shhhhhhhhhhhh), by the good ppl over @ Adult Swim.
The homie Anenon, repping LA's Non Projects and some of the freshest sounds, goes on a cross continental collab with the good ppl over @ Error Broadcast to offer a stellar mix for all to hold on to.
In his own words:
"This mix is an assortment of songs new and old that have really been filling my spirit lately as we transition into fall & winter. Music from friends is represented as well as some new material from myself hinting at my evolving and more melodic than ever personal sound. A big thank you to Error Broadcast for the request and please enjoy."

Been a min since we've had something pop in Toronto. Well, here. We. Go.
I'm glad to have to Lucky Me's Lunice in town which will be his 1st gig in fact since the release of his Stacker Upper EP and his online release event. Pretty nuts. Interviewed Lunice a whilst back, on his come up @ the 1st Megahurtz event. He form BC One to RBMA grad to now Lucky Me fam. Congrats.
This one should be nice. Never seen Lunice live? You need to be there. + you'll likely get to witness the worldly Purp Walk.
As well, another installment of R&D with the Tuff Gang (Ultragamma + mymanhenri) tandem. We're gonna have fun.

This has been bubbling for more than a hot min. In a recent convo, Devonwho had mentioned than he and Klipm0de collaborator Mndsgn were working on a record. The only thing he failed to mentioned, is that it was a quasi dbl album.
Episodes, the new album by Devonwho and Mndsgn is a colossal 29 track composition which essentially feels like a year's worth of work. Wow.
Classic Klipm0de production is du jour on this record, hard drums, deep basslines, soft synths... It's been a min since we've heard from the crew, and this is a welcomed return, brand new Episodes. You can scoop the album for $10 @ the Klipm0de bandcamp.
Computer Jay has been steady on that grind tweaking dials, enjoy the fruits of his labor ripe as they are. He put out a 12" on Ramp, started to tour w/ Master Blazer, was featured on Gaslamp Killer's Death Gate EP and had that outstanding release w/ Dam Funk on All City. Say wrd. Computer Jay returns to what I'll call the scene of the crime: The HVW8 podcast. Aug 2007, he curated Live @ The BBQ podcast #18 for HVW8, along w/ Kutmah. Just over 3 yrs later, he returns to the West Hollywood gallery to curate once more for the famed troupe.
If any of you recall that 1st one, you'll scoop this. If you recall the releases this year, you'll scoop this. If you didn't get down w/ any of the above, you need to scoop those + just get down with this one. Period.
You can stream it here #allday, or just download it. Sh*t is bananas.
Magical Props act My Dry Wet Mess whipped up a quasi chopped and screwed tape of beats for cats to _________ to. You fill in the blank. But this is a hella fresh listen indeed. Whether you wanna talk shit, swallow spit or blow that smoke that hella thick, he got you.
I STILL recall that Essential Mix. Hudmo said it, and now 1 yr later, we are pleased to see the very 1st official release from money making Manchester's Krystal Klear.
The boogie virtuoso Krystal Klear has been co signed by the likes of Benji B, playing the leaked banger Tried For Your Love incessantly, and was eventually knighted by the lord himself, Dam Funk, when he was offered a slot in Culver City's famed Funkosphere. Say wrd.
Tracklist for the 12" looks as follows:
A1 Tried For You Love
A2 Boogie Wan
B1 Dekyrptic
B2 Tried For Your Love (Hudson Mohawke Remix)
Yes, that does say Hudmo on the rmx. The 12" should be out Dec 6th physical one week later on the digi.
Size med, thinn finns, 1nce constantly bespectacled but now more off than on. Now on 1st name basis with foreign immigration. Window seats if I have my say. Amaretto sour when I play the back, banana jacks when I spark the night, Jager bombs when I'm calling the shots - let's do it right. Family all day long.
