Mary Anne Hobbs: Volcano Refugee Mix ft Daedelus, Ras G, Flying Lotus, Teebs, Take & TOKiMONSTA [DWNLD]

I still recall Mary Anne Hobbs' message to the world just over 1 week ago: something about being stranded in Los Angeles. Are you really stranded when you're in one of your favorite cities?? And who travels w/o their laptop nowadays? But all was understood. World travel was disrupted by plumes of ash coming from a now famed Icelandic volcano (<---- amazing photos btw). She was able to make the best of it nonetheless.
As a result, last night's show was inspired by this natural dis...dis... disruption (some say economic as well). And it went a little something like this...

The Volcano Refugee Party featuring...

Daedelus, Ras G, Flying Lotus, Teebs, Take and TOKiMONSTA.

From a natural disaster to an unnatural and almost perverted delight. Some of LA's best put it down for Mary Anne Hobbs for this special radio broadcast.

Daedelus: Stampede Me [VIDEO]

You don't have that Righteous Fists Of Harmony yet? Man... One of my faves this year. I've been letting the metronome slide downhill and the music has been sublime. Daedelus plays w/ tempo tremendously.
Nonetheless, the EP is a beautiful one @ that, w/ tracks that i've been working into sets.
Here's the latest vid from the Brainfeeder EP: Stampede Me

Morpheground: Off D'Wrekkid Vol. 1 [DWNLD]

You start to chat w/ cats so much, you start to forget about the music. Emerging from the land of fast Piaggios and fresh pasta comes Morpheground, a young Italian from a small city w/ big riddims. Some may recall a rare BANGER of his that had been floating around called Most High (which I featured on my now antiquated mix), and after a momentary layoff, he's now reemerged w/ newness.

The new EP is a freebie. Make sure you show some love right back. Say Wrd.

Lorn: Cherry Moon [DWNLD]

News is blowing right by me like a young Brandon Jennings these days. Speaking of the Bucks, Milwaukee's Lorn just leaked a track over @ FACT Mag, and not sure if it's me but that sci-fi slow flow got me in a cobra clutch right now - totally locked in. Sh*t is bananas and I've been opening my sets w/ that 70 bpm bizness, and da da da da - dahhh, I'm lovin it. This Cherry Moon is hella ripe for the picking. Wish cats would let that metronome loose more oft and let it swing freely. There's nothing wrong with a creeping cadence.
FACT Mag will have this up for another 5 days from the date of this post. Grab whilst you can. I might have it up afterwards.

Incredibright: New Take Video [VIDEO]

One of our faves and all around cool cat Take, has just released the new video to his lead off single Incredibright, from his newly released LP Only Mountains.
The stop motion video clip was shot over a three day period, and required somewhere north of 60k pics to complete. Nuts. The post prod must have been pretty laborious, but a labor of love no doubt.

Shigeto: Semi Circle EP [DWNLD]

Just released days ago from Ghostly is an EP from Ann Arbor native Shigeto né Zack Saginaw. A trained jazz drummer who has made the transition to production after tinkering away w/ Reason, and now composes full time under his given middle name, in honor of his Japanese great grand father and heritage. With that, we present the Semi Circle EP.

As a 1st release on Ghostly International, Shigeto's Semi Circle EP is an ode to family, melody, and the art of the beat. Nice. Plans are to have a full length later this year. We're looking fwd to it. Semi Circle EP is available now.

Africa HiTech: Blen.

More like... BLAOW!
No one could be happier than I. At long last, Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek are Africa Hitech.

For the regular listeners of Benji B, Alex Nut et al.... you have heard the name, and heard the music. You will now be able to own it just the same.
You may recall some early sampling of this digital duplet (Turn It On 12", Falling Away by Harmonic 313), and might I add it was the best interpretation of what some might call blacktronica, but essentially electronic soul. This project was born in Toronto during the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007, and looking back, I likely walked into a few of the sessions unknowingly. In fact, I know I did. Who knew those fall 2007 sessions were portents of pulsating riddims to come.... Sick.

Africa Hitech is the genius of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek. Dream digital, think tecno, envisage electronic, visualize west indies. Both Pritchard and Spacek have a fondness for electronic and a deep respect for west indian sound and those both blend in this new Blen 12" from Warp.
Might I add that hearing from Steve Spacek was long overdue, and Mark Pritchard is keeping his remarkable course, following an incredible 2009, and stellar start to 2010 w/ this new Africa Hitech 12" and project. Next up will be the EP which is done, and is just fantastic. In the meantime, enjoy and order this 12", if not for this artwork alone. The 12" should be in stores April 19th 2010.

Kenlo Craqnuques: Essencial Craqs Mixed By Sven Swift [DWNLD]

From the wonderful city of Montréal, land of the greatest poutine, Schwartz smoked meat and Super Sexe (lol), resides African Kenlo Craqnuques. Long time stalwart of the beat community, he's been honing his craft w/ his trusty MPC by his side. With several releases under his belt, they caught the attention of the good ppl over @ Error-Broadcast. It was only right that they then bring him in to the family's fold, and plan more releases. Fast forward to 2010 and we are proud to make such an announcement.
Coming to the catalog from Error Broadcast will be a new release from Kenlo Craqnuques Cailloux Germés .
Due out in the very near future, it will be the newest from Kenlo's already expansive craqnuque catalog.... and its a banger, believe me.
And to celebrate said coming release, Sven Swift over @ Error-Broadcast put together a mix: Essencial Craqs: Kenlo Craqnuques.

This will be available as download soon (next week apparently), but is a full stream in the interim.

Samiyam & Ras G: All City LA#3 [DWNLD]

From opposite ends of the LA area, friends, label mates and 404 pundits, Red Bull Music Academy grad Samiyam and Ras G buckle up and blast off for another edition of the now famed LA 10" series, the 3rd from All City Records.
No stranger to intergalactic travel, Ras G and his African Space Program deliver 3 tracks from his end of the soul-ar system, heavily sample laden, tempo driven and with all the beats, bleeps, bells and whistles that have made his sound so signature.
Samiyam suits up as well to offer his own signature sinister sound: stirring synths and that slow flow. We're even treated a little surprise beat outro banger on a track entitled Space. Nice. But you might just have to wait til that hits stores to hear it...
And of course, B+ on the artwork.
Available in finer record shops on April 19th, LA#3 by Samiyam & Ras G should be added to your ever growing collection from All City Records.

Producer No 2 Might Be No 1

Some may recall Producer No 1 which came out just about 2 yrs ago (i do believe), but we now have the sophomore edition of the comp, and a brilliant one @ that.
After a campaign of several 12" leading up to the full comp, it's a treat for those who aren't so much into singles and want that whole record. Well here it is: Producer No 2.

With an all star lineup featuring Mike Slott, DIBIA$E, Low Limit, Monopoply, iLLum Sphere, Devonwho, Eric Lau, Harmonic 313 (on the wonderful rmx bizness) and so many more, there aren't too many words to add other than this is a must. Again, some of these may sound familiar to your ears as they've floated on mixes left and right for the last little whilst, but there are some new titles to list as well like new comers Darkhouse Family among others.
Anyhow, this producer No 2 might very well be a No 1, in my books. Nice one Fat City.

Erik L's The Soularp Suite [DWNLD]

One year later, i'm still loving Soul Symphony. Huh?!?! That was a banger of a track that was featured on a Ubeat compilation last year, a beautiful joint w/ a prettier melody, and all from the genius of Erik L.
He had since been working on his 1st solo LP and it has finally arrived: The Soularp Suite.

Composed, produced, enginered & mastered by Erik L. On this, his first solo album, Erik L plays every instrument: from his masterful work on the keys, to the bass or sequencing the kicks and snare. Keeping it organic, Erik L went with little to no sampling, and played it all out maintaining that bass heavy funk and electric soul as the base for this musical expedition.
Taking his inspiration from European and classic Nordic folk, Erik L has once again demonstrated that talent and dexterity to translate and put to tape his creativity and harmonies. Guest appearances by Detroit soul-diers Frank n Dank, past collaborators Cerebral Vortex & Stray as well as Paul Mac Innes.
